A Sunset Proposal in Lower Slaughter | Cotswolds Proposal Photographer

There is something particularly lovely about the Cotswolds in October. The villages are surrounded by autumn colours, the evenings are getting shorter, and the golden light just before sunset can be absolutely beautiful.

For this surprise proposal in Lower Slaughter, we couldn't have asked for a more romantic setting.

My couple had travelled all the way from Singapore for a trip around the Cotswolds, but there was something rather special planned along the way!

A Surprise Proposal in the Cotswolds

Although they both live in Singapore, the UK already held some lovely memories for her, having previously studied at university in Leicester.

For him, however, this was his very first visit to the UK.

He had planned a trip exploring the Cotswolds and wanted to find somewhere beautiful and peaceful to ask that all-important question.

He chose Lower Slaughter, a small Cotswolds village known for its traditional stone cottages, picturesque bridges and the River Eye running through the centre.

And I can certainly see why!

Rather than planning anything elaborate, he wanted a quiet, meaningful moment for just the two of them.

Planning the Perfect Lower Slaughter Proposal

One of the things I love about photographing proposals is helping with the planning beforehand.

When he first got in touch, we discussed the location and where the proposal could take place.

Lower Slaughter has several beautiful spots, but we decided on one of the village's stone bridges overlooking the river.

With the proposal planned for sunset, we also had to think carefully about the light and where I would position myself to photograph the moment without interrupting it.

There's always a little bit of anticipation when photographing a surprise proposal. Unlike a wedding, where you generally know exactly when the ceremony is happening, proposals can unfold in a matter of seconds!

And you only get one chance to capture that reaction.

A Sunset Proposal on the Stone Bridge

As they made their way towards the bridge, everything was ready.

With the beautiful October light falling across the village, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

And she said yes!

There were smiles, excitement and a newly engaged couple standing together on one of the prettiest bridges in the Cotswolds.

What made this proposal particularly interesting was that he had previously worked as a wedding photographer himself!

It's always lovely photographing someone who understands the work that goes into capturing important moments, especially when they're the one in front of the camera this time.

Engagement Photographs Around Lower Slaughter

After the proposal, we took a relaxed walk around the village for some engagement photographs.

This is one of my favourite parts of photographing proposals.

The surprise is over, the nerves have settled, and the couple can simply enjoy those first moments of being engaged.

We wandered along the river, stopping at some of the beautiful corners of Lower Slaughter for photographs.

There was no need to rush or turn the experience into a big photoshoot. Just a lovely walk together, with a little gentle direction from me when needed.

And with the warm evening light and traditional Cotswold cottages in the background, it was such a beautiful setting for their first photographs as an engaged couple.

Is Lower Slaughter a Good Place to Propose?

If you're planning a surprise proposal in the Cotswolds, Lower Slaughter is definitely somewhere worth considering.

It's a small village with plenty of character, beautiful stone bridges, riverside walks and traditional Cotswold architecture.

The bridges and river provide particularly lovely backdrops for photographs, while the surrounding village offers several different locations for a short engagement session afterwards.

A few things I'd recommend considering when planning your proposal:

Choose your location carefully. The village is popular with visitors, so it's worth thinking about where you'd feel most comfortable proposing.

Think about the time of day. Sunset can create beautiful light for photographs, although the exact position of the sun changes throughout the year.

Allow time for photographs afterwards. I always recommend leaving a little time after the proposal for a relaxed walk and some engagement portraits. It's such a lovely way to remember the occasion.

Have a plan for the surprise. Knowing where you're going to stop, where your photographer will be positioned and what happens afterwards can make everything feel much more relaxed.

And if you're travelling from abroad, having someone local to help with the photography arrangements can make planning that little bit easier.

Planning Your Own Cotswolds Proposal?

Whether you're visiting the Cotswolds for the first time or returning to somewhere that already holds special memories, I'd love to help you plan and photograph your proposal.

I'm Alina, a Worcestershire-based wedding and proposal photographer covering the Cotswolds and surrounding areas.

I photograph the proposal itself, then we can spend a little time exploring the location together for some relaxed engagement photographs.

I can also help you think through the location, timing and photography arrangements beforehand, so you can concentrate on the important part: asking the question!

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Lower Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway or elsewhere in the Cotswolds, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
